Exidy Targ & Spectar DIP Shunts
Both Targ and Spectar utilized DIP shunts to set which voltages are sent to the game’s ROMs and PROMs. These DIP shunts act as permanently set DIP switches. Incorrectly set, the wrong voltages will be routed and likely damage these components.
One of the board sets I acquired was missing the DIP shunts and unfortunately the Targ and Spectar manuals don’t say how they should be configured for different types of EPROMs. After getting some other boards to compare to, here is the missing information:
DIP Shunt at 10D
This DIP shunt controls the voltages going to 11D, the game’s Moving Objects Image Storage PROM.
It should look like this for a 2708 (1k) (+5v,-5v,+12v), which is normal for a Targ.
It should look like this for a 2716 (2k) (+5), which is normal for a Spectar.
DIP Shunt at 11B
This DIP shunt controls the voltages going to ROMs 6A through 12A, the game’s program ROMs.
It should look like this for a TMS 2716 (2k) (+5v,-5v,+12v), which is normal for early Rev A. Targ motherboards.
It should look like this for a 2716 (2k) (+5), which is normal for Rev. B Targs and all Spectar boards.
